48-hour notification required for all hospitalizations - 50% penalty if not obtained

Maximum Coverage Period per Incident

Earlier of: 30 days OR medical stabilization achieved

Medical Stabilization Definition

Coverage ends when: stable vitals 24hrs, no immediate danger, can travel home safely, or discharged 48hrs

Coverage Area

Outside USA/Canada (100+ miles from border). No coverage in home country.

This is Supplemental Emergency Coverage

Expat Guard is emergency medical and evacuation insurance designed to supplement, not replace, your primary health insurance. You must maintain coverage in your home country. Expat Guard pays benefits in excess of your primary insurance.

Pre-Existing Conditions

All pre-existing conditions are excluded except for acute onset emergencies

Medical Emergency & Stabilization

Coverage is for medical emergencies requiring immediate attention to prevent serious health jeopardy. Coverage ends when you are medically stabilized (vital signs stable for 24 hours, no longer in immediate danger, fit for commercial travel) or after 30 days, whichever comes first.

Understanding Chronic Conditions vs. Acute Onset

To Qualify as Covered Acute Onset, ALL Must Be True:

  • Condition was stable/controlled for 120+ days before the incident
  • No recent medication changes or doctor warnings about travel
  • Sudden onset requiring treatment within 24 hours
  • Could not have been reasonably anticipated
  • Not a gradual worsening over days/weeks

Unlike many insurance policies, Expat Guard covers both terrorism-related injuries and COVID-19 treatment as any other emergency medical condition. This is an important benefit in today's world.

Within 100 miles of US/Canada border
Treatment outside Latin America (except evacuation to home)

Routine/Preventive Care - Check-ups, screenings, vaccinations
Elective Procedures - Any non-emergency treatments
Follow-up Care - After stabilization or discharge
Vision Care - Routine eye exams, glasses, contacts

Pre-Existing Conditions

Chronic Conditions - No routine care, medications, or monitoring
Maintenance Treatment - Ongoing medications and check-ups
Known Complications - Expected complications of existing conditions
Travel Against Advice - Conditions where physician advised against travel

Important Policy Notes

48-Hour Notification Required: Contact us within 48 hours of hospitalization or face a 50% penalty on benefits.

90-Day Claims Deadline: All claims must be filed within 90 days from date of service.

Primary Insurance Required: You must maintain health insurance in your home country. Expat Guard provides emergency coverage when you're outside your primary insurance area.
